The LB744 packs a V12 combustion engine and 3 electric motors.

Lamborghini has revealed the first details on its first HPEV (High Performance Electric Vehicle), codenamed LB744. LB744 will be a sports car and most likely the successor to the Aventador. So far Lamborghini has only allowed us a look at what the plug-in hybrid powertrain looks like, so lets take a deep dive into the internals of this new sports car.

Lets breakdown what compromises this plug-in hybrid powertrain. At the heart is a new 6.5 liter naturally aspirated V12, which Lamborghini says is the most powerful and lightest they have ever made. The new v12 tips the scales at just 218 kilograms, 17 less than the Aventador engine. This V12 makes 814 horsepower at 9,250 revs per minute, with a redline of 9500 rpm. The torque figure 535 lb-ft of torque at 6,750rpm. One of the many unique things Lamborghini has done is that you will find this V12 has been rotated 180 degrees from how it was arranged in the Aventador.

Now lets talk about those 3 electric motors. The first two are mounted to the front axle, each supplying traction to one of the front wheels. The third electric motor is situated above the eight-speed double-clutch transmission and along with the V12 can supply power to the rear wheels, of course this depends on the driving mode and the conditions. When you combine the max power from all sources the new Lamborghini can put down 1,001 horsepower and 793 lb-ft of torque.

Now, the unique thing about this new chassis is that unlike previous AWD Lamborghini’s the LB744 does not use a driveshaft to power the front wheels. That is one big advantage of electric motors on both from wheels. So Lamborghini was left with an empty transmission tunnel that use to house a driveshaft. This is now where they put the 3.8-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. This battery back and electric motor setup allows the LB744 to drive short distances on electric only power.

For now that is that Lamborghini is showing us, but I would expect to see what the Sheetmetal and carbon fiber looks like in the coming months. Stay tuned.
